Meister Eckhart, the great Rhineland mystic, wrote in the 13 Century:
Man in the soul, transcending the angelic being and is guided by the intellect penetrates showing the origin, which the soul has sprung. There, however, must remain outside the intellect, with all nameable things. There, the soul merges into a state of pure unity. We call this the people of the soul, and you should understand it as follows: man is the soul, is the one who has achieved all this, and now he does not need any more help. How far he was at work, God works in him now. God recognizes him, and he saw God, God loves him, and he loved God. So full of God does all the work and the man in the soul is naked and stripped of all things. You should know how is a person who has reached this state, we can rightly say that he is God and man. Note how he has acquired, through grace, all that Christ had by nature. And his body is exceedingly filled with the precious essence of the soul, which in turn is nourished by God and the divine light that we can proclaim rightly: This is a divine man! But unfortunately, my children should regret it these people because they are strangers that nobody knows. All who ever hope to come to God, can easily be confused with the people, because it is hard for foreigners to carry out this: No one can understand it, unless it seems the same light in him. And that is the light of truth.
